Comedora Comunitaria Nkä'äymyujkëmë
Oaxaca is a major stop on the route most migrants take between Central America and the US. The only shelter shut down during the early pandemic. Oaxaca is also a place of great economic inequality for Indigenous peoples, women, children, queer/trans folks, and other gender dissidents.
These are who the Nkä'äymyujkëmë community kitchen and refuge serves.
The name of the kitchen means, "everyone eats" in the gender-neutral Indigenous language of the ayuujk jää'y people of Oaxaca's northern Mixe region.
When Oaxacan Indigenous communities suffer from disasters, the community kitchen distributes donations of money and goods to affected areas. This week they are cooking for a feminist strike contingent picketing for an Indigenous land defender, demanding her safe return after being disappeared.
Well Beings is fundraising to ensure that the community kitchen can pay their rent every month. I don't take a profit from this website yet, and I am committed to ensuring that Nkä'äymyujkëmë has their rent paid before I pay myself.
If you can't afford to subscribe, or you are already a subscriber but want to donate directly to the community kitchen, you can do so from within Mexico, or from any international banking platform, like Wise.
Additional one-time donations can also be made through Well Beings here.
